I’d like to think Energy piles are sustainable………being able to take in energy from the ground from a structure that’s going in the ground anyway, requires a lot less energy! My work at the minute is to understand if they will still be working as well 50 years after they’ve been installed! Only then will we know if they are truly sustainable!
I think my project is sustainable as well as it aims to reduce waste and reduce carbon emissions. Unfortunately there are so many definitions of sustainability that you can argue many different points.
Some might say my efforts should be put into rennovating buildings that are already there, and I agree with that, unfortunately that’s not what my aim is with this project.
There is no one hard and fast answer to everything, you need to look at buildings and their surroundings on a case by case basis, and sometimes concrete and steel will be the best materials to use.
If I’m honest my project probably doesn’t promote sustainability, I work more to protect us from the environment than the environment from us! Hopefully though with advances in technology, transport like helicopters and planes will become more and more fuel efficient and help to tackle major environmental issues.
