• Question: how long do you get free

      Not sure I understand question, but if you are asking about holiday, then I get 27 days holiday per year, plus bank holidays. I also normally get weekend free. Also, some companies including mine give you the option of buying additional time off if you want – normally upto 5 days extra.

      If you mean days off, not a lot of time unfortunately compared to school holidays. Engineers, as with most jobs, only get around 7 weeks of holidays a year! (including Christmas, Easter, bank holidays etc).

      If you mean in a day, I finish at around 4.30 most days and 12.30 on Fridays, and all the time apart from the I am free. Because I work on military stuff and it’s secret, I’m not allowed to take it home, which means I get no homework!

      If you’re asking about holidays, I get 25 days holiday and on top of that I get the 7 bank holidays, so 32 days holiday in total! We aim for 37.5hours a week and there is some flexibility day in day out, say you might need to stay in for a delivery or leave early for a gym class.

      Thankfully I’m still a student 😀 so I get a few more holidays than these guys! I officially get 6 weeks to take off when I like, for holidays etc, but my working day is very flexible, it’s more the case of I put the time in to get what ever I’m working on finished and if there is something else going on, e.g. doing some work in schools etc. I can plan my week around it! If I want to take a couple of days off through the week, I can do as long as I haven’t got any labs running, because I can catch up the time at the weekends! I know a lot of PhD students who work at the weekend, but I adopted the rule that all work and no play isn’t good for you 🙂

      I get 25 days of holiday a year then all the bank holidays as well. I am also on felixable time which means I can start as early as 7 or as late as 10 and finish between 4 and 7, as long as I have done enough hours by the end of the week. Also if I do more hours then I have to ( which you do) you get an extra half day holiday.
