Technically I don’t get a wage which I pay tax on since I get a grant from the University. I get £15,00 which is the same as having a job which pays around £23,000-25,000 by the time you take off tax and national insurance etc, my course fees are also paid by the university, along with all the materials I need for the lab and travelling around to the country to conferences and the like.
I also get paid to do teaching at the university, that’s £15-16 per hour…..I definitely wouldn’t say I’m poor, but I couldn’t go and buy a mansion any time soon…… I have enough money to buy things that I want and save some for when I finally decide to buy a house *scary thought*!
I get payed about 28000 a year now, which is quite a good wage! As Nicola said though, the Tax Man comes and takes a lot of that away :(. I’d say im comfortable though, and if you stay in engineering (depending on what type of engineering) you get payed more. I think normal engineers get around 35,000 -40,000 a year, and managers up to 60-80,000 a year!
If you want the most money then the Oil industry pays engineers the best. They can earn hundreds of thousands a year!
