as well as having a funky name, he was a British engineer who designed the world’s first suspension bridge, and helped to design several railways, tunnels and ships. I like him because he always tried to do things different to everyone else. Not all his ideas worked, but he wasn’t afraid of failing and by always inventing different ways to do things came up with great ideas (like propellers on boats!) which are now used everywhere today.
My idol engineer is Joseph Bazalgette – a contemporary of Brunel, he was chief engineer for the Metropolitan Board of Works – basically the London Council. He designed the London sewerage system. Its not at all glamorous, but without that London or any major city would be impossible to live in. What I like about him is that even though no one had attempted any such project before, he had a vision of what he wanted to acheive and the practical knowledge to put it into practice. It was a massive project and is still in operation today – over 160 yrs later.
